  Valentine's Day Heart

Here are some Valentine's Day activities and some links to activities on other sites.

A Valentine Clown

Students do a colouring exercise that reviews colours, clothes and numbers.

Material: Worksheet 1 (72k)

Answer: 17

A Secret Message

Students decipher a message in which each letter is represented by a picture (A is a small drawing of a spider, etc.).

Material: Worksheet 2 (60k)

Answer: You are the best! I love you.

Optional extension:
Students draw their own secret messages, inventing the other "letters" they need.
  • Decide who the message will be for: students, loved ones or classmates.
  • Brainstorm possible messages with the students: Happy Valentine's Day, I Love You, You Are My Favourite Person, Be My Valentine! etc.
  • When the students have drawn their messages, they can colour and cut out the hearts.
  • You can have the students exchange their hearts and decipher the messages, you can post them in the classroom and have each student choose one at random to decipher and read aloud, or you can let the students take the hearts home to their loved ones.
Material: Worksheets 2a, 2b (68k) or blank paper

Make a Heart-to-Heart Chain
  • Explain that a "heart-to-heart talk" is a frank, serious conversation.
  • Tell the students that they will make a heart-to-heart chain with messages they would like to send to someone special. (They don't have to say who.)
  • Have them each cut out a heart shape from red construction paper or plain white paper.
  • Ask them to write a Valentine's Day wish on each heart , see the suggestions below.
  • Staple or glue all the hearts together, and hang the heart chain in the classroom or corridor.
Possible Valentine wishes:
Happy Valentine's Day
I give you my heart today
Love
Material: paper or Hearts (4k), a simple outline to photocopy on red paper

Make a Heart-of-My-Heart Display
  • Explain to the students that the expression "heart of my heart" means someone who is very special to you. For example, a father may say that his daughter is the heart of his heart.
  • Ask the students to cut out hearts from red construction paper or plain paper.
  • Ask them each to choose one person who is very special : a relative, a friend or a hero.
  • Have them put a picture or drawing (or just the name) of the special person in the heart and label it "The heart of my heart."
  • Post the hearts on the bulletin board or allow the students to take them home.
